One of the advantages of having a fast and efficient hex meshing program is that we can experiment with different race car configurations.

The LMP car shown here is our latest project. Our goal is to increase downforce and reduce drag by investigating different body types. The idea is, that instead of trying to increase downforce through wings that invariably produce extra drag we are reducing the vertical lift contribution of the body.

With high yaw angles as in a spin, vertical lift from the body shape is the main contributor to flip overs.

This type of analysis requires an accurate LES turbulence boundary layer flow model in order to capture the flow separation.

In terms of drag the front wheel region is the main contributor and this requires special attention in order to capture the development of vortices that in turn influence the flow over the aft regions and through the ground effects diffuser.
